What Is Gourmet Cooking?

from: Gourmet Living - by Martin Fothergill

For many people, the question is, "what is gourmet cooking?" The fact is that gourmet is a term that can be used in several ways. Anyone can prepare gourmet foods, though. You do not have to be a chef from a fancy restaurant to appreciate the benefits here. In many ways, this type of cooking comes and goes with popularity. It may be in demand in times when the economy is doing well and falter some when the economy is slipping. What's more, learning what is gourmet cooking means understanding that it is more than just food but also a style of fashion. Sometimes, there is no better place to go to eat than a fancy, five star restaurants. Other times, the burger is in. Yet, there are several key elements that define gourmet cooking.

What Is Gourmet Cooking: The Defining Moments

There are several things that really do make up gourmet cooking. Consider these aspects of it for example.

• High quality ingredients. There are no cutting costs here. Only the finest cuts of meat are used with only the freshest of ingredients. What is more, it is nearly impossible to use some of these foods in more value styled foods. Many of the ingredients are expensive and hard to find. This extravagance is what helps to define gourmet cooking because it is gourmet, or special. In many ways, you will find many ingredients only offered in this style rather than in others.
• Highly prepared meals. The food is cooked to perfection in gourmet cooking. Here the food is cut, cleaned, and cooked to precision. It is not overdone or undercooked. Each vegetable is cut precisely, with care paid to the details. This allows anyone and everyone to get the finest quality and provides for more labor intensive measures. This is part of the reason that gourmet cooking is more expensive.
• Artfully presented. Another signature of what is gourmet cooking is the way in which it is presented. Unlike visiting a local restaurant where your plate is stacked high with food, here you have a smaller portion (in most cases) that is presented in an artful and unique arrangement. The goal is to make the food look just as appealing as it tastes.

Learning what is gourmet cooking is something that you will have to do when you enter into a gourmet cooking school. Yet, if you wish to prepare meals like this at home, you can do that as well. There are many wonderful flavors, textures and designs that can be employed that you are sure to find many great foods to provide to your family. Gourmet cooking is cooking at its finest.
